Safety in Cars

There are many dangers associated with driving with unrestrained pets. Just as we wear seat belts, pets should also be secured in a car or motor vehicle at all times! Everyone is aware of the dangers of driving without wearing a seat belt, these dangers also apply to pets. Your pet could be killed or kill another person in the car, if projected forward in the event of an accident.

Safety Options

1. There are a range of options available to help ensure that your pet is safely restrained. The pet should be in the back rather than the front alongside the driver where they can cause a distraction.

2. A cage is the ideal way to restrain your pet in the car. Make sure the cage has a strong frame and is attached to car so it cannot move and has adequate ventilation. If your pet is to be a regular traveler in your car, then a cage or a crate should be fitted. While some pet owners think the cage may have negative connotations, it should be noted that it has been known for dogs in cages to survive serious car accidents.

3. Alternatively, dogs should wear strong harnesses that can clip into the seat belt of the back seat. These harnesses also have a clip so that the dog can be walked on a lead without having to remove the harness.

4. Never allow your pet to have its head outside the window. They are in danger of head trauma, inner ear problems and lung problems.

5. Never leave your pet alone in the vehicle. They can overheat very quickly.

Some Car Comforts

1. Covering the car seats with seat covers will ensure that they stay clean especially if you travel frequently. Specific seat covers can be used but old sheets, towels or blankets are also ideal.

2. A blanket for your pet to sit on is ideal, even in his cage. This can be reassuring if you use a familiar blanket.

Car Travelling Tips

1. Get your pet prepared for a long journey by going on a number of short journeys first.

2. Do not feed your pet before you travel or in the car during travel. Wait until the journey is over.
